Stone-pelting erupts after mobile snatching in Darbhanga; 5 held
DARBHANGA, Feb. 27 -- Five accused were arrested in connection with violence that gripped Madarpur locality under Laheriasarai police station limits in Darbhanga district late on Wednesday night, following a mobile snatching incident that left one youth severely injured, police said.
According to the station house officer of Laheriasarai police station, an FIR (No. 104/26) has been registered based on the complaint lodged by the mobile owner, and all five accused involved in the crime have been taken into custody.
Police said the trouble began when a student staying in a lodge for his studies was allegedly threatened at knifepoint by three bike-borne youths and robbed of his mobile phone. The student reportedly chased the accused to their residence and raised an alarm with the help of friends, demanding the return of his phone.
Eyewitnesses stated that a woman from the accused's family promised to return the mobile the following morning. However, the students refused to back down, leading to a heated confrontation.
Soon, residents from both sides gathered, and the situation escalated into heavy stone-pelting.
During the violence, a tempo driver, Chhotu Kumar, who had reached the spot, was injured and admitted to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
Senior officers, including Sadar sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Rajiv Kumar, arrived at the scene along with personnel from multiple police stations to restore order.
Police said family members of Mohammad Gulab, Mohammad Shahid, and Mohammad Azad allegedly hurled stones at the students, who later fled.
Local residents described the accused youths as habitual substance abusers.
Investigation is ongoing, and police are looking into further details of the incident....
