PATNA, Oct. 17 -- Seven people, including a woman sub-inspector, one constable and three home guards, were on Friday arrested for the murder of an excise constable Ajit Kumar who was reported to have been killed in the firing of liquor suppliers during a raid on a vehicle in Nalanda district on October 14. The arrests followed after the police investigation found that the constable sustained the bullet wound in firing from the rifle of a home guard jawan. The Nalanda SP Hridaykant said, "Constable Ajit Kumar was not killed from a gunshot from the liquor smugglers, but from a rifle shot fired by a home guard jawan who was part of the team called in to assist the raid. Seven people, including female sub-inspector Pushpa Kumari, have been arrested in connection with the case. Police are now investigating possible attempts to conceal evidence and misleading authorities after the incident," he added. The SP said that the incident had occurred around 10.30pm on October 14 under Pawapuri police station area. "A team from the excise intelligence bureau of the excise department, which had come from Patna, was pursuing a pickup truck loaded with liquor. The team was travelling in a private black SUV vehicle. In its attempt to intercept the truck, the team decided to lay siege from the front. SI Pushpa's team, stationed in Rajgir, was called in for assistance. As per the plan, Pushpa's team was to assist in stopping the pickup truck from the front," he added. But, he said, the vehicles changed positions and the liquor-laden truck moved ahead. The trailing police team opened fire and a constable was hit by a bullet that was fund to have been fired from a homeguard in SI Pushpa's team, the SP said. "During interrogation, the home guard jawan admitted to firing three rounds. Two of these rounds misfired, while one went off. The bullet pierced the rear window of the Scorpio that was travelling ahead and struck constable Ajit Kumar in the back of the head. Ajit died from this bullet injury," the SP said. He said that the incident occurred on the night of October 14, but the local police station was not immediately informed. Senior officials were also informed the next morning, he added. Upon receiving information about the incident, the SP rushed to the crime scene and formed a special investigation team (SIT) led by the Rajgir SDPO. The SUV used in the incident was taken to Patna instead of being immediately brought to the police in Nalanda, he said, adding that it raised suspicion. The next morning, the police seized the vehicle in Patna and the revelation about the constable being wounded in firing by the homeguard instead of liquor smugglers unfolded, the SP said. He added that the further investigation into the case is underway....
