SDPO, SHO, others booked for youth's encounter
PATNA/bhojpur, June 24 -- Six days after the police encounter that killed Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, a youth from Bilauti village in Bhojpur district, the district police on Tuesday filed an FIR against the then Jagdishpur SDPO, the then Shahpur SHO and other police personnel.
Five police officers have already been suspended after questions were raised on their role in handling the youth when they had reached to arrest him.
Tiwari, who was killed on June 17, was said to be an activist. He was brandishing a gun while negotiating with police. According to his parents, he was a "mentally deranged" individual who had even surrendered his weapon, yet he was killed by the police officers.
According to the FIR, he was hit with five bullets and succumbed to his injuries at the PMCH in Patna. His death led to a statewide uproar and the state government ordered a judicial inquiry on June 20 to probe his encounter and subsequent death.
The Bhojpur police booked police officers connected with Tiwari's encounter under sections 103(1) and 3(5) BNS and section 27 of the Arms Act. The case was investigated by Inspector Sanjeev Kumar and the FIR was filed based on the investigation's findings.
The FIR was filed based on a written complaint submitted by Asha Devi, the deceased's mother, police said. Devi told HT that she filed a complaint against Jagdishpur SDPO Rajesh Kumar Sharma, SHO Rajesh Kumar Malakar and other policemen for her son's murder.
Meanwhile, Bihar Deputy CM Vijay Kumar Choudhary said that given the matter's sensitivity, the Samrat Choudhary government wasted no time suspending the concerned police officials and ordering a probe under a retired High Court judge. "The Samrat government will not spare anyone found guilty. The probe will make everything clear and people should trust that the probe will be transparent," he added.
Tiwari's parents have not performed post-cremation rituals of their son as they claim they will not do so until the perpetrators of his murder are brought to book. Leaders and activists across the spectrum are visiting their home to show solidarity.
Meanwhile, a petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking a CBI probe into Tiwari's death, terming it a "extra-judicial" killing....
