Saree-clad woman runs 1,600 metres barefoot in race for home guard's job
RANCHI, Oct. 8 -- In an extraordinary display of determination witnessed in Jharkhand's Ramgarh district, Kavita Mahto, a widow, ran barefoot for 1,600 metres within 7 minutes in a race trial for a home guard job. Moreover, she completed the feat wearing a saree.
The race was organised by HMT Physical Academy, Dulmi on October 4, said the academy director Ajay Karmali, adding that the recruitment drive will be held from October 24 to November 5.
"The woman is Kavita Mahto. Her husband, Deepak Mahto, died three years ago. Her husband's younger brother also died six months ago in a road accident. She has two children under 12, an elderly mother-in-law and father-in-law. All depend on her. She works as a housemaid. When we organised the trial run, she completed 1,600 metre in just seven minutes, although 10 minutes is given to women to complete the race conducted for home guard recruitment. Although many women in sarees participated in the race and completed successfully, we identified Kavita as unique because she completed her race ahead of time," Karmali said.
Karmali said the woman was provided a kit for practice.
"We provided her with a proper kit for practice. The home guard recruitment drive, which aims to fill 284 positions," he said.
A homeguard official said that Kavita's chances of being selected in the recruitment are high. "In this recruitment, 50% of the total seats are reserved for women, while widowed and divorced women receive an additional 5% reservation. Kavita is a widow and deserving," the official said.
"I went to run in a saree because I didn't have a tracksuit or shoes. I could not arrange the same as I had no money to purchase," Kavita said when asked about the reason for running in a saree.
On her interest in the home guard job, Kavita said: "By getting this job I will be able to work while staying at home and taking care of my elderly father-in-law, mother-in-law and two children."
Kavita said she gets up early in the morning at 4am and practices on a ground near her residence....
