RDA calls off strike after release of two students
PATNA, May 23 -- The Resident Doctors Association (RDA) of Indira Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (IGIMS) withdrew its work boycott call on Friday evening after police released two MBBS students detained in connection with Thursday's assault on the institute's engineering staff members following hours of negotiations.
The protest by resident doctors began at 1:30 pm, and was called off at 6:30 pm after police released Shaurya Anand and Satyajit Pandey, both final-year MBBS students of 2022 batch. They had been detained early Friday based on CCTV footage related to Thursday's clash.
RDA president Dr Rajat Kumar said resident doctors had suspended work to protest the police action but ensured that emergency services and hospital functioning were not completely disrupted. "We called for a work boycott by resident doctors at 1:30 pm on Friday, which we withdrew at 6:30 pm after the students' release. We did not disrupt emergency or hospital functioning and allowed consultants to work," he said.
The fresh unrest on Friday led to demonstrations by junior doctors and MBBS students inside the hospital premises, affecting patient services for several hours. Hospital officials said patient registration at the OPD was briefly disrupted, affecting outdoor consultation and several scheduled surgeries, which inconvenienced patients and their attendants.
Sources said hectic negotiations were held among IGIMS administration, district administration, police and representatives of the health department, eventually paving the way for the release of the two students.
The latest flare-up comes amid continuing tension at the premier state-run medical institute following an alleged assault on engineering department personnel on Thursday.
According to police, junior engineer Rishu Mishra and two other engineering staff members were allegedly assaulted by a group of junior doctors inside the campus. Rishu Mishra reportedly sustained head injuries, while the other two victims were also seriously injured.
An FIR has been lodged at Shastri Nagar Police Station naming three postgraduate students of IGIMS in connection with the incident. The dispute is said to have originated on Wednesday evening when Mishra went to the radiology department to repair central air-conditioning system. A verbal altercation allegedly broke out between engineering staff members and two postgraduate medicos, which subsequently escalated into Thursday's clash.
Mishra had lodged a written complaint with IGIMS administration about the behaviour of the postgraduate doctors in the radiology department. People familiar with the incident said this complaint angered the junior doctors and MBBS students, leading to the assault on the engineering staff members....
