Raxaul-Ghorasahan canal road in East Champaran collapses
BETTIAH, Aug. 5 -- A 25-feet stretch of the Raxaul-Bhelahi-Ghorasahan canal road, which carries water diverted from Gandak irrigation system, collapsed following heavy pressure and high water current in the canal river at JaI Mangalpur village under Siswa panchayat in Raxaul subdivision of East Champaran early Tuesday, disrupting connectivity.
"There was no loss of life reported though water gushed into low-lying areas of some villages after the collapse," said Raxaul CO Arvind Kumar.
Of late, the Gandak has turned turbulent after a rise in water levels following rains in the catchment areas of Nepal and East and West Champaran, coupled with discharge of water from Valmikinagar barrage.
Rajesh Kumar, executive engineer, Ghorasahan branch canal division said repair work of the damaged portion is underway. "There was an aging outlet through which irrigation was underway. It has been raining for the past two days and prima facie, it collapsed due to pressure exerted by water," he said....
