Dehradun/Haldwani, Sept. 5 -- The political row over the alleged 'purification ritual' at Haldwani's Ramlila Ground has escalated, with the Congress announcing a march to Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami's residence in Dehradun on September 7 and the BJP planning parallel 'social harmony resolution sit-ins' across Uttarakhand on the same day. The Congress has accused the state government and BJP leaders of failing to act against those allegedly involved in the ritual following a party programme attended by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge at the venue on August 8. The party has described the alleged ritual as an insult to Kharge, one of its prominent Dalit leaders. The BJP, however, has rejected the allegations and accused the Congress of attempting to exploit the controversy to create caste-based divisions in Uttarakhand. The issue dates back to August 8, when Kharge addressed a Congress rally at the Ramlila Ground in Haldwani. The event was followed by a controversy after some individuals allegedly conducted a 'purification' ritual at the venue. The Congress has since demanded action against those involved. The party said the matter was also raised in the Rajya Sabha, claiming that the Rajya Sabha chairman expressed concern over the incident and asked the government to ascertain the facts and ensure action against those responsible. Congress state president Ganesh Godiyal said that despite several days having passed, no action had been taken. "Kharge has also written to BJP national president JP Nadda, seeking to know whether an inquiry had been conducted and whether action had been taken against those responsible", he said. Godiyal said complaints were submitted to the Governor, senior police officials, but no FIR has been registered against those involved in the alleged ritual. The Congress has reiterated three demands: action against those who conducted the alleged purification ritual; registration of FIRs against Uttarakhand BJP president Mahendra Bhatt and the CM for allegedly defending the ritual; and quashing of an FIR registered against Rahul Gandhi at Haldwani Kotwali. Congress has described the FIR against Gandhi as unnecessary, factually baseless and part of a "planned conspiracy". The BJP has rejected the allegation.
