police probe passports for foreigners on bihar addresses
PATNA, Oct. 2 -- The police in Bihar have launched a drive to verify details of the local addresses mentioned by about 32 foreigners (30 Afghan and 2 Bangladeshi nationals) seeking Indian passports, according to officers familiar with the matter. According to officials, the majority of these addresses are in Patna, with the rest in Darbhanga, Khagaria and Muzaffarpur districts.
According to officers, the verification drive started after receiving reports from the Union ministry of home affairs and the Ministry of external affairs. The regional passport office (RPO), Patna, has sought an address confirmation report from the DMs/SSPs and SPs of the concerned districts through the state government.
According to officers, many foreigners changed their names to obtain passports and some passport racket must have assisted them. The police are verifying what documents these foreigners used as supporting credentials to get Indian passports. The DIG (special branch) has sought the address verification report from the concerned DMs, SSPs and SPs of the district. An official said many Afghan nationals reside in Patna....
