Meerut, June 22 -- Bareilly police arrested four individuals following a late-night encounter on Saturday, marking a breakthrough in a case involving the snatching of women's earrings. Two of the suspects sustained leg injuries in retaliatory fire, and police recovered the stolen jewellery, along with illegal weapons and the motorcycles used by the gang. According to Baheri circle officer (CO) Arun Kumar Singh, the robbery took place on June 18 near the Chureli Canal Bridge. Chandrapal was returning from his in-laws' house along with his wife and sister-in-law when six armed men riding two motorcycles intercepted them and allegedly snatched a pair of earrings before fleeing the spot. Following the incident, an FIR was registered and a joint investigation team comprising the Surveillance Cell, Special Operations Group (SOG), and Baheri Police Station personnel was formed to identify and arrest the culprits. Investigators analysed CCTV footage and other technical evidence, which helped police trace the suspects. The breakthrough came on the night of June 20 when sub-inspector Mohit Mavi and his team were conducting vehicle checks at Pachpera Crossing. During the operation, six suspicious men were spotted approaching on two motorcycles from the direction of Mudiya Navi Bakhsh. On noticing the police presence, the suspects attempted to turn back and flee, prompting officers to chase them. As the pursuit continued, the suspects spotted the vehicle of the Baheri station house officer approaching from the opposite direction and diverted their motorcycles towards Labhedi village. Both motorcycles reportedly lost balance and crashed due to high speed. Two accused, identified as Lalit and Sachin, suffered injuries in the fall. Police said the remaining four suspects ran towards nearby fields and opened fire on the pursuing team with the intention of killing police personnel. During the exchange of firing, two accused, Vikas and Saurabh, sustained gunshot injuries to their legs and were overpowered. All four injured suspects Vikas, Saurabh, Lalit and Sachin- were arrested at the scene, while two of their accomplices managed to escape under the cover of darkness. Police have launched a search operation to trace and arrest the absconding accused. During the arrests, police recovered the pair of earrings allegedly looted in the June 18 robbery.
