Police fire on mob protesting girl's death in accident in Jamui
PATNA, June 12 -- Bihar Police on Thursday resorted to firing to disperse a rampaging crowd that gathered to protest after a Class 10 girl died after being run over by a speeding truck in the Khaira locality of Jamui district. No one was injured in the firing but the area remained tense until late evening and a heavy police force was deployed, said police officers familiar with the details.
According to witnesses, the police fired around 12 to 15 rounds in the air while people were protesting.
Police said the truck hit Muskan Kumari, 13, from behind when she was cycling to her coaching centre. The driver dragged her about 10 metres. Her body was somehow removed from under the rear wheel of the truck seven hours after the incident. Police sent the body to Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
Victim's mother, Sanju Devi, said, "My daughter used to go for coaching every day at 6 am. A stone-laden truck trampled her to death today. After killing my daughter, the driver bribed the police to avoid the law's noose. Instead of arresting him, the police are coming and firing at us."
As news spread, a large number of residents arrived at the spot, blocked the road near Khaira market and vandalised the truck. The protesters went on a rampage and engaged in brick-batting when the police tried to remove the blockade. A few hundred villagers chased policemen with sticks and brooms. They pelted stones at the police team and ransacked two police vehicles.
The police first fired tear gas shells, but with the protesters unwilling to relent, they reportedly opened fire in the air. "The situation has been tense but under control," said Jamui SP Vishwajeet Dayal.
"As the number of police personnel was small, the police opened fire in self-defence to disperse the mob. The police station was also attacked by anti-social elements. Based on the video, an FIR has been registered, and six people have been taken into custody. About 12 police personnel were injured in the stone-pelting," he added....
