BETTIAH, Aug. 27 -- District administration in West Champaran, East Champaran, Muzaffarpur and Gopalganj have sounded alert, asking people dwelling in low lying area to move to the safer place in view of rise in water level of Gandak after the flashfloods in Nepal on Tuesday. Video footage from vulnerable areas in Bagaha-1 block, along with audio clips of announcements made by the district administration warning villagers about a possible rise in water levels, has flooded social media groups. "Due to the landslide in Nepal, a rise in the water level of the Gandak river is apprehended. Villagers are being alerted to stay safe, avoid venturing towards the river and move to safer places along with their livestock," an audio clip is heard saying. Following this, a mass exodus of villagers from Jhandu Tola, Bin Toli and Chakdahwa was reported, as these villages are among the areas likely to be the first to bear the brunt of the rising water. Wasim Akram, circle officer of Bagaha -2 said efforts have been launched to evacuate about 250 families dwelling in low lying areas in Jhandu Tola, Bin Toli and Chakdahwa to safer place. "Arrangements for their stay have been made in a government school at Bherihari and other places," said the circle officer. When contacted, Dhananjay Kumar, headmaster of Utkramit Madhyamik Vidyalay, Bherihari colony, near Valmikinagar said, "50-odd people have already reached the spot. All necessary arrangements are being made in coordination with the district administration." In Jhandu Tola in Bagaha -2 block, the urgency was writ large on every face. Basant Ram, a resident, was seen scrambling on Wednesday, gathering whatever essentials he could grab including utensils, a few sacks of grain, bedding - as he along with a handful of fellow villagers were seen racing against time to ferry their belongings to safer ground. "Nearly every household in and around our village has left. While, some have taken shelter on Jhula Pul near Thari (in Nepal), some at relatives' place and government school at Bherihari near Valmikinagar," said Ram. Located at the distance of about 60km from Valmikinagar, scene at Sisayi and Chiurahi panchayats in Madhubani block of West Champaran was no different. A majority of villagers of Narahwa, Barahwa and Sogi Barwa have already shifted to elevated position along state highway on Dhanaha-Ratwal road in West Champaran in anticipation of a rise of water in the Gandak. Videos emerging from the spot, the villagers were seen moving to the safer locations in Baluwa panchayat of Paprasi block of the district in tractor-cum-trolley and on foot. According to officials, Jhandu Tola, Bin Toli, Chakdahwa and Kailashnagar in Bagaha, villages under Sisayi and Chiurahi panchayats in Madhubani block of Bagaha subdivision, Baluwa panchayat in Paprasi block, Bajuwa in Bairiya block and parts of Nautan block in West Champaran have been identified as vulnerable areas. In East Champaran, some low-lying areas in Sangrampur, Paharpur, Kesariya and Areraj have also been identified as vulnerable. At Muzaffarpur, the district administration spotted areas in Sahebganj, Saraiya and Paroo blocks are likely to be affected....
