PATNA, Aug. 19 -- The Patna district transport officer (DTO) on Monday launched a special drive to identify families of hit-and-run victims who may be eligible for Rs.2 lakh compensation under the Centre's Compensation to Victims of Hit and Run Motor Accidents Scheme, 2022, officials of the transport department said on Tuesday. Around 1,500 compensation applications are pending at the Patna DTO's office due to incomplete documentation since the commencement of the scheme in 2022. Besides, the department is also trying to tap victims' relatives who are ignorant about the scheme, so that they could apply for the compensation under the scheme, the officials added. "The campaign, initiated by Bihar's transport department, aims to ensure that eligible victims and their dependents do not miss out on financial assistance due to lack of awareness. The scheme provides compensation in cases where vehicle involved in an accident cannot be identified or flees the scene," said Upendra Kumar Pal, Patna's DTO. "The district transport office is reaching out to affected families and encouraging them to initiate the claim process. Claims will be considered after verifying relevant records and eligibility in accordance with prescribed rules," added Pal. Families of deceased hit-and-run victims who have not yet claimed compensation have been asked to approach the Patna district transport office with the required documents.
