PATNA, April 26 -- The Bihar government has installed over one million of the targeted 1.1 million solar street lights in around 45,000 villages, officials said on Saturday. All district magistrates (DMs) have been instructed to install LED TVs to monitor these installations. Panchayati raj department director Nabin Kumar Singh said that the installation of solar street lights in gram panchayats has gained significant momentum and they are close to the target. "Over 10,77,000 solar street lights have been installed and we expect to achieve the target of 1.1 million by the end of this month," he said. Singh added that LED TVs will be installed at all district collectorate premises in the state. This would serve the dual purpose of showing the operational status and providing transparency in the installation of solar street lights. "The work has been directed to be completed in the next few weeks," an official said. "There have been complaints from many places that solar street lights don't work or have been non-operational for days. The real-time display of the solar street light operationalisation would help the government redress any faulty street lights quickly and also address people's grievances," the director added. Solar street lights in over 8,000 gram panchayats covering around 45,000 villages across the state are being installed under the Mukhyamantri Solar Street Light Yojana, with BREDA (Bihar Renewable Energy Development Authority) as the nodal agency for the project. A sum of Rs.76 lakh has been sanctioned for this project. In another development, the panchayat raj department has directed officials to ensure death certificates are issued to the families of the deceased in rural areas within 24 hours after the last rites are performed. An official said that around 120 death certificates have been issued in Bihar since implementation began on April 1. "We have started deploying ward members and panchayat members at designated crematoriums and graveyards to process the certificates within the stipulated time frame," said another official....
