No transport curb can stop the country's youth: Chirag
PATNA, Oct. 10 -- Union minister Chirag Paswan on Friday questioned the cancellation of trains ahead of the Cockroach Janta Party's (CJP) proposed protest in New Delhi on Saturday, saying no attempt to restrict transport could stop the country's youth. His remarks appeared to put the government on the defensive after four trains from Patna to Delhi were cancelled ahead of the demonstration at Jantar Mantar.
"These are the youth of India - nothing can stop them. To those attempting to spread such misconceptions, I ask: how many trains can anyone really stop? How much connectivity can be blocked? How many roads can be jammed?" Paswan told reporters on the sidelines of a convocation ceremony he attended at Sonipat in Haryana.
He said India's youth had the capacity to show the world the way, as previous generations had done, and could not be held back. The remarks followed the cancellation of four trains, three of which originated from Patna's Rajendra Nagar terminal on Friday. This move could affect CJP activists and sympathisers travelling to Delhi for the October 10 protest. The cancelled services were the 20801 Rajgir-New Delhi Magadh Express, 12309 Rajendra Nagar Terminal-New Delhi Tejas Rajdhani Express, 12393 Sampoorna Kranti Express and 22361 Amrit Bharat Express.
The railways did not officially disclose the reason for the cancellations. However, senior railway officials said that the Railway Board took the decision as part of a pan-India measure to prevent congestion around New Delhi and Hazrat Nizamuddin railway stations during the protest.
"The decision on cancellation of trains was taken at the level of the railway ministry and communicated to the zonal headquarters," a senior railway official said.
The cancellations left passengers scrambling for alternatives at short notice. Some were forced to postpone their journeys, while others explored air travel. An economy-class ticket from Patna to Delhi for Saturday was priced at around Rs.7,000 on Friday evening. Most evening flights from Patna to Delhi, including those of IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet were delayed between 20 minutes and up to three hours.
Railway officials maintained that passengers were informed of the cancellations by Friday afternoon, after the ministry communicated the decision to zonal headquarters around 10am.
Meanwhile, police stepped up security and surveillance at railway stations and bus terminals across Patna ahead of the proposed protest....
