No reversal of prohibition: Govt
PATNA, April 25 -- Bihar chief minister Samrat Choudhary on Friday termed the "total prohibition" in Bihar a historic decision, while deputy CM Vijay Kumar Choudhary defended it as a move following a unanimous resolution of both Houses of the Bihar Legislature.
The statements are significant amid growing speculations on the fate of prohibition after former CM Nitish Kumar's exit from the Bihar government. As the prohibition has completed 10 years, there have been murmurs even within the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) over its efficacy and possible review.
"Prohibition was a historic step by Nitish Kumar," said Samrat Choudhary. Just a couple of days ago, he maintained that there was no looking back on prohibition.
Referring to the passage of the prohibition law, Vijay Choudhary said it was a mere coincidence that when the law passed in the House in 2016, he was sitting in the Speaker's Chair, the Speaker was sitting where Tejashwi is sitting (Opposition) and the Leader of the Opposition was sitting in his place (as Deputy CM), which evoked instant laughter in the House.
"The prohibition law is meant to prevent people from consuming, storing, or smuggling alcohol. If action is taken under the law, how has it failed? Unfortunately, in case of any death under suspicious circumstances, everyone's first priority seems to be proving it was caused by spurious liquor, while nobody says that consuming liquor is wrong," he asked....
