NHRC notice to Bihar govt over reports saying student drank smuggled booze
New Delhi, April 10 -- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to the Bihar government and the state's police chief over reports that a school student allegedly accidentally drank illicit liquor mistaking it to be a 'soft drink'.
The liquor was stored in a huge quantity at a dilapidated toilet of the boy's school in Begusarai district.
The incident was reported by the media on April 8.
There has been a ban in Bihar on manufacture, sale and consumption of liquor since April 5, 2016, when it was declared a dry state, the National Human Rights Commission said on Thursday.
The rights panel said it has taken suo motu cognisance of media reports that on April 6, a fourth standard student "accidentally consumed illicit liquor mistaking it to be a soft drink.
"It was stored in huge quantities in bottles at a dilapidated toilet of his school in Siswa area of Begusarai district of Bihar, the NHRC said in a statement. The student returned home in a state of intoxication to much shock to his family members who then informed the school authorities and the matter was brought to the notice of the police.
Reportedly, the police had seized 23 cartons containing about "204 litres of illicit liquor from the toilet," the NHRC said.
