Namesakes of Nitish, Lalu fail in bypoll
PATNA, Aug. 4 -- Two of Bihar's most recognisable political names featured on the Bankipur Assembly by-election ballot, but their namesakes failed to make any electoral impact, polling only a handful of votes.
Independent candidate Nitish Kumar, who shares his name with former Bihar chief minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar, secured 149 votes, while another Independent, Lalu Prasad Yadav, namesake of RJD president Lalu Prasad, polled 81 votes, according to the final Election Commission results.
The two were among the 25 candidates in the fray but remained on the margins of a contest that eventually culminated in Jan Suraaj Party (JSP) founder Prashant Kishor defeating BJP's Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 19,324 votes.
RJD candidate Rekha Kumari finished a distant third.
The presence of the two Independents briefly brought Bihar's two most iconic political names together on the ballot paper - not as leaders of rival political formations, but as the namesakes with little electoral traction....
