PATNA, July 15 -- The Bihar Special Task Force (STF) on Tuesday unravelled an illicit affair that had gone horribly wrong and culminated in the murder of Dev Kumar Gunjan, a junior engineer-cum-technician with the electricity department posted at the Malaypur power grid in Jamui, by arresting three people, including the victim's wife, a Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI), her alleged lover and a contract killer. The arrested have been identified as Smita Kumari, an MVI posted in Supaul and the wife of the deceased; Ajit Kumar Saw, a technician; and Dheeraj Kumar alias Raju Yadav, the alleged contract killer. Gunjan was shot dead aboard the moving Amritsar-Narpatganj Jansadharan Express near Badlaghat railway station under the jurisdiction of the Mansi Government Railway Police (GRP) in Khagaria district on June 11. Acting on a tip-off, a Special Operations Group (SOG) team of the STF first arrested Ajit Kumar Saw from Saho Bigha under Ghosi police station in Jehanabad district. "During interrogation, Ajit Kumar Saw confessed that he had been in an illicit relationship with Smita Kumari, the deceased's wife, for the past nine years. Gunjan had opposed their relationship. To eliminate him, Ajit hired contract killer Dheeraj Kumar alias Raju Yadav of Sujatpur under Ghosi police station and paid him Rs.3.60 lakh," Director General (Operations) Kundan Krishnan said. Based on Ajit's statement and technical evidence, STF and the SOG arrested Dheeraj from Islampur in Nalanda district. During questioning, he also allegedly confessed to his involvement in the murder, Krishnan said, adding that Dheeraj has a criminal history. According to police, the incident took place near Badlaghat railway station under the jurisdiction of the Mansi GRP, where the assailants gunned down Gunjan.
