BETTIAH, Aug. 8 -- Govindganj police in East Champaran district on Friday recovered the bodies of a woman and her four children who drowned in a pond on Thursday evening, even as rivers flowing through the Champaran region continued to swell following heavy rainfall, inundating several low-lying areas and causing severe inconvenience to students at a government school in West Champaran during the ongoing monsoon. Govindganj station house officer (SHO) Sachidanand Pandey said the bodies were recovered from a pond at Bhabhnauli village under the jurisdiction of Govindganj police station on Friday, a day after they went missing. "Prima facie, it appears that the woman and her four children, two of them daughters, misjudged the water level and drowned in a Chaur (wetland) area while she had gone to collect fodder for her livestock along with her children," the SHO said. The deceased were identified as Sushila Devi, 34, wife of Dharmendra Mahato; Amrita Kumari, 11; Avinash Kumar, 8; Pammi Kumari, 8; and Ravi Kumar, 4, all residents of Bhabhnauli village. Their bodies were sent for autopsy. "Further investigation into the matter is underway," he added. Meanwhile, in Bagaha subdivision, residents of Been Toli, Chakdahwa, Kanahi Tola and Jhandwa Tola continued to reel under waterlogging as water from the Gandak river overflowed into low-lying areas following a rise in the river's water level due to incessant rain in Nepal and its catchment areas, coupled with the discharge of 1.75 lakh cusecs of water from the Gandak river on Friday. "So far, the situation has remained unchanged.
