MLC elections: Tirhut, Patna constituencies record highest voters
PATNA, Oct. 9 -- The final updated voters' list for the biennial legislative council for eight seats of graduates and teachers constituencies to be held on October 23 has been prepared with Tirhut graduates' constituency having highest number of 143,000 votes among four graduates seats while among four teachers' constituencies, Patna teachers seat has highest 11,719 votes, as a per an official statement issued on Thursday.
Incidentally, the number of voters in four teachers' constituencies has declined by 5,407 voters from the last updated final rolls in January this year, which is attributed to strict verification of credentials of voters, according to officials in the know of the matter. On the other hand, official added, the number of graduate voters has increased.
The total number of voters in four graduates' constituencies namely, Kosi, Tirhut, Darbhanga and Patna stands at 4,92,594 whereas for four teachers constituencies, namely Tirhut, Darbhanga, Patna and Saran, the total number of voters stand at 40,253.
"The updated voters list would be the electoral rolls on which the biennial polls would be held on October 23rd. There have been additions and deletions of voters too since it's last updation in January," said an election official.
In fact, if one compares the number of voters for graduates and teachers constituencies with the previous final list published in January this year, the number voters' for graduates constituencies have increased whereas it has witnessed a decline in four teachers constituencies. In January final list, there were total 48,4943 from four graduates' constituencies of Patna, Tirhut , Darbhanga and Kosi. Similarly, the total number of voters in four teachers constituencies in January stood at 45,660. In the updated list, it stands at 40,253 votes for four seats.
Under the election rules, a teacher working in secondary school to higher institutions (colleges/ universities) can enrol as a voter in teachers constituency if the person has three years of experience in teaching in an educational institution in last six years from the date of biennial polls.
"This time, we sent the names of the voters having put applications for enrolment to their respective educational institutions for cross verification as whether they are working there or have worked for three years in last six years. This has helped in weeding out many voters who had made false claims of being eligible to become voters in teachers constituencies. This is one reason, why there has been deletions," said an election official, in know of the matter.
He said there were many applications put by people claiming to be a teacher in any educational institution but in reality, they were non-teaching staff. "It was noticed that many non-teaching staff were also enrolled or had put applications for enrolment. They were struck off the list," he added.
Election officials said that the increase in voters' in graduates constituencies was due to awareness among the graduates of various constituencies and campaign launched by the election department to enrol new voters....
