Minor scuffle at Patna protest; many detained
PATNA, Oct. 14 -- Amid widespread protests against the alleges malpractices in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls and for resignation of the chief election commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar, All India Students' Association (AISA) and the Revolutionary Youth Association (RYA) on Tuesday held a demonstration in Patna.
AISA serves as the student wing of the Communist Party of India (Marxist-Leninist) Liberation, while RYA is the party's youth wing.
As the students marched towards the Lok Bhavan with their demands, a minor scuffle broke out when the police personnel attempted to prevent them at the Dak Bungalow and CPI-ML MLA Sandeep Saurabh, who was with the protesters, was seen being tossed over the barricades. Several students tried to jump over the police barricades and were subsequently detained. Police said that they had earlier detained around two dozen protesters at the JP roundabout near historic Gandhi Maidan.
However, there was no report of any major injury to anyone or direct clash of protesters with the police.
AISA state vice-president Saba Afreen said their protest march was for a genuine concern about the electoral rolls being tempered with and it can potentially jeopardise the independent and fair practice of electioneering. She said the students sought the review of the SIR.
Saurabh also described the alleged deletion of names in SIR as a serious issue and demanded accountability from election officials. He questioned the transparency of the procedures for adding and removing names from electoral rolls, including the process for registering new voters through Form 6.
"This is not just an allegation by the opposition, but there have also been several revelations. Despite the differences between the CEC and the two election commissioners, the entire SIR process was carried out. We want the resignation of the CEC," said Saurabh, accusing the CEC of acting on behalf of the BJP and centralising the entire electoral data by uploading it on the ECINet portal and thus taking away the powers of local election officials.
In a comically dramatic moment, a protester ran away with the keys of the bus in which the police had detained the protesters. Later, another police bus was called and the detainees were taken to a distant location before being freed.
The activists began gathering at Gate 10 of Gandhi Maidan, carrying banners and posters criticising the CEC. They also raised slogans such as "Vote thief, step down" and "Gyanesh Kumar, resign." There were other posters too, reading, "Blow your chair from the protest and 'Samosa jayega tel (oil) mein, Gyanu ko bhejo jail mein'".
Heavy police deployment was put in place to contain the protesters from marching towards prohibited places or going unruly.
The students sat on the ground at Dak Bungalow and shouted slogans against the government and the CEC for about an hour. The police led by city SP (Central) Chandra Prakash pacified them and the protest was called off.
The Patna district administration has designated Gardanibagh as the venue for the rally and demonstration, making it clear that any demonstration elsewhere will be subject to legal action. Patna DM Kundan Kumar and SSP Kartikey K Sharma issued instructions that the designated site lin Gardanibagh shall be used exclusively for demonstrations and strikes....
