Man dies in police lock-up in mysterious circumstances
PATNA, July 15 -- A 60-year-old man, who along with two men were detained on charges of consuming alcohol, died in mysterious circumstances in police custody on Tuesday morning, police said. The person, identified as Anil Kumar alias Tuntun Kushwa ,died in the custody of the excise police station of Arwal. He was detained late on Monday and died on Tuesday around 7am.
Police said, it being a custodial death, a judicial enquiry had been called and a magistrate from Arwal initiated the process.
Ashok Kumar, nephew of the deceased, alleged that Anil had gone to Validad village in Mehandia police station area on Monday evening for some work, from where the excise team caught and took him to the police station. The excise personnel brutally beat him inside the lock-up, which caused several bruises and cut marks on the body.
Police, however, said the man was ill for long and at the time of his detainment, he was found in drunken state. The reasons of death would be known only after the post-mortem report, they added.
Irate over the incident, family members and locals gheraoed the police station, created ruckus and demanded action against those responsible as well as compensation to the next of kin of the deceased.
They also blocked Patna-Aurangabad NH-139 near Bhagat Singh Chowk and disrupted vehicular traffic for two hours. On getting information administrative and police officials reached the spot and tried to pacify the mob, where a scuffle reportedly broke out between police and the protesters....
