PATNA, July 14 -- The main accused in the murders of Army jawan and his father in Vaishali's Bidupur police station area was injured in an encounter early Monday. Police alleged the accused Jagdish Rai tried to snatch a cop's firearm and opened fire while trying to escape. He was injured in retaliatory firing and undergoing treatment in the Hajipur sadar hospital. According to police, Jagdish Rai, the main suspect in the killing of Army jawan Jitendra Kumar and his father Munarik Rai, both residents of Rajasan village under the Bidupur police station limits, sustained gunshot injuries to both legs during the exchange of fire. Police said that they had received information that Jagdish was hiding in a Boy's Hostel at Bahadurpur in Patna. Acting on the tip-off, a team raided the hostel, nabbed him and took him into a police vehicle to take him to Vaishali. As soon as the vehicle reached near Bidupur Bazar, Jagdish, allegedly tried to snatch a rifle from a cop, jumped from the vehicle and fired on them. Vaishali SP Subhank Mishra said, "Shots were fired at the police personnel, but none of our personnel were injured. Two bullets struck the police vehicle. The accused, sustained bullet injuries near both knees, and the bullets exited his legs. He is in stable condition. The firing occurred while the police were attempting to apprehend him." Police said that Jagdish has a criminal record, with several serious criminal cases, including murder already registered against him. Police are questioning him to identify the involvement of any other individuals in the double murder case. Preliminary investigation revealed that some family members led by Jagdish had allegedly blocked a pathway leading to the victims' residence, triggering repeated disputes over the past few days. Tensions had flared on Saturday night, prompting police to intervene and restore order. However, the dispute resurfaced on Sunday and culminated in firing around 200 metres from the victims' house. Jagdish opened fire at Munarik and his son. While Munarik died on the spot, Jitendra was taken to the Sadar Hospital with critical injuries. He succumbed to his injuries during treatment.
