Mahananda exp derails near ara railway stn; no passenger injury
ARA, Sept. 7 -- Two coaches of the Delhi-bound Sikkim Mahananda Express derailed near Bihar's Ara Junction railway station in the early hours of Sunday, officials said, adding, that there were no reported injuries, but the derailment affected operations of a number of trains.
According officials aware of the matter, the SLR and H-1 coaches went off the tracks. The incident, which occurred around 4 am, caused a stir among passengers on board. Railway officials initiated relief and rescue operations.
The derailment of the train disrupted traffic on the Delhi-Howrah route, affecting trains such as Howrah-Amritsar Mail, North East Express, Vibhuti Express, Gandhidham Express, Ara-Capital Express, Farakka Express, Bhabua Intercity Express, Kolkata-Ara Garib Rath Express, Patna-Banaras MEMU, Udhna-Ayodhya Express, Seemanchal Express and South Bihar Express, and many passenger trains
According to railway officials, the station master of Ara railway station, NK Rai, has been suspended after the incident.
The loco pilot said the train had arrived at Ara Junction at 4:12am, alleging that he received the green signal for the Sasaram route instead of Delhi's due to a technical fault. He added that the train subsequently derailed on the up line 200 metres past the station.
Saraswati Chandra, chief public relations officer of the east central railway zone in Hajipur, clarified that the green signal was intended for another train. "The Mahananda Express had been signalled to stop. However, the loco pilot mistook the signal for his own and proceeded, leading to the derailment," he added.
Chandra further clarified that the station master's suspension was due to administrative lapses rather than direct involvement in the derailment. The Mahananda Express had resumed its journey three and a half hours after the incident.
Danapur DRM Vinod Kumar and other officials visited the Ara Railway Junction and inspected the incident and rescue operations....
