BETTIAH, July 2 -- In one glance, they looked like any ordinary family on a road trip-a man at the driver's wheel, a woman by his side and a child in the back seat. The picture-perfect family turned out to be a liquor smuggler's ploy to ferry liquor into Bihar after excise officials intercepted their car at Kotwa in East Champaran district and recovered 60 liters of Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) concealed in a specially designed cavity inside the vehicle. Inspector Shivendra Kumar, East Champaran excise department, said that acting on a tip off, the seizure was made from a car on NH-27 at Kotwa, while the vehicle carrying the consignment was on its way to Bihar's Muzaffarpur from Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday evening. The accused were charged under section 30 (A) of the Bihar Prohibition and Excise Act, 2016, (manufacture, possess, sell, distribute, transport, or store any intoxicant or liquor). "Initially, the woman protested the search of the vehicle citing that they were returning to their native place after offering prayer at a temple. However, when police searched their vehicle, 60 liters of IMFL was uncovered from a specially designed cavity in the car," Kumar said, adding that the credentials and family backgrounds of the accused are being verified. Kumar said the search team grew suspicious after the man repeatedly used the word 'family' during their conversation. The accused were identified as Vijay Paswan (41) and Kavita Devi (37), both residents of Muzaffarpur. They have been arrested. Meanwhile, a 15-year-old boy, who posed as their son, has been apprehended and dealt with under the provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act, he added. "Investigation revealed that Paswan, Devi and the juvenile had been hired by members of the liquor mafia for Rs.2,000, Rs.1,000 and Rs.500, respectively, to pose as one family and smuggle liquor into Bihar," he said....
