PATNA, Sept. 14 -- The National Lok Adalat held across Bihar on Saturday has scripted an all-time record for the state, disposing of 200,211 cases and settling Rs.423.22 crore in a single sitting - the highest single-day disposal and settlement figures ever recorded at a National Lok Adalat in Bihar, officials of the Bihar State Legal Services Authority (BSLSA) said on Sunday. The previous best for a single sitting stood at 1,11,725 cases disposed on May 9, 2026 and Rs.329.57 crore settled on March 8, 2025; Saturday's numbers surpassed both by a wide margin, Awinash Kumar, joint secretary of BSLSA said, describing it as the most successful Lok Adalat in the authority's history. Traffic challan cases, including e-challans over 90 days old for compoundable offences under the Motor Vehicles Act, were taken up in large numbers on the day. As many as 85,539 traffic challans were disposed of out of the 5,82,246 challans eligible to be taken up for settlement through the National Lok Adalat, realising Rs.12.40 crore in settlements. A total 45,719 traffic challans were disposed of, mopping a total revenue of Rs.7.39 crore in settlements during the previous National Lok Adalat on May 9 - when traffic challans were taken up for the first time in the state for settlement through the National Lok Adalat on the orders of the Patna high court.. Significantly, traffic challans alone accounted for a majority - 43% - of all 2,00,211 cases (pre-litigation and pending court cases) settled at Saturday's Lok Adalat, underlining how motor vehicle offences dominated the day's proceedings across the state. Patna (25,325 cases and Rs.2.19 crore realisation), Muzaffarpur (14,057 cases, Rs.1.08 crore realisation) and Bhagalpur (12,424 cases, Rs.87.57 lakh realisation) together disposed of around 51,800 traffic challans - more than half the state total - while Banka, despite a comparatively modest disposal count of 2,549, realised the single highest settlement amount among all districts at Rs.2.24 crore, pointing to a larger share of high-value compounding cases, as per data sourced from BSLSA. Patna realised Rs.2.19 crore for settling 25,297 traffic challans, according to Patna's district transport officer (DTO) Upendra Kumar Pal. Patna and Banka districts had accounted for around 10,000 cases each, while Muzaffarpur recorded disposal of nearly 8,000 challans of the total 45,719 traffic challans disposed of, realising Rs.7.39 crore through settlement at the Lok Adalat on May 9. The figures also highlighted the overwhelming public response to the state government's One-Time Traffic Challan Settlement Scheme-2026, under which motorists were offered concessions up to 50% on select offences for clearing pending e-challans. A year-wise comparison of National Lok Adalats held since March 2025, including resolution of pre-litigation and post-litigation cases, shows a consistent rise in both disposal and settlement, with Saturday's sitting emerging as the best performance so far....
