BETTIAH, Sept. 16 -- Bihar Police arrested an alleged liquor mafia from Uttar Pradesh for allegedly supplying spirit that was used to make spurious liquor that claimed 11 lives in the district earlier this year, police said on Tuesday. In an official statement issued on September 15, the East Champaran police said the accused, identified as Suraj Singh, son of Sitala Prasad Singh, was arrested from Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. A reward of Rs.25,000 had been announced for information leading to his arrest. Following his arrest, he was brought to Motihari. "He denied the charge. But he broke down during sustained interrogation and confessed to his involvement in supplying spirit," Ranjit Kumar, station house officer (SHO) of Turkauliya, said, adding that the contraband was used in the preparation of spurious liquor that proved fatal. The hooch tragedy, which occurred in parts of East Champaran after people allegedly consumed spurious liquor in Turkauliya on April 1 this year, left at least 11 people dead. A resident of Jaunpur in Uttar Pradesh, Suraj Singh's name surfaced during the investigation, prompting police to announce a cash reward of Rs.25,000 for information leading to his arrest in June. In another development, Chhatauni police in Motihari arrested a person and seized 400 litres of spirit while it was being transported from West Bengal to East Champaran on Monday....
