PATNA, Sept. 25 -- Torrential downpours, strong winds, and sharp swings of temperature battered the state after a deep depression tracking north-northwestward from the northern Andhra Pradesh and southern Odisha coasts, collided with mid-tropospheric western disturbance troughs, officials said on Thursday. India Meteorological Department (IMD) scientist Ashish Kumar confirmed that this depression over the Bay of Bengal has triggered massive moisture convergence spanning Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. "Bihar is likely to witness widespread, very heavy rainfall on Thursday, with the heavy spell persisting over Friday and Saturday," Kumar said. Official bulletins from the IMD and the Bihar Mausam Sewa Kendra (BMSK) painted a stark picture of extreme micro-level variations over the past 24 hours. Banka district bore the maximum brunt of the downpour closely followed by Dulhin Bazar in Patna. Concurrently, gale-force winds battered local infrastructure, clocking an astonishing peak of 76 km/h at Mokama. Before the skies opened, the state swung between extremes: Chanpatia in West Champaran sweltered at a blistering 37.3degC, while Kaimur's Adhaura nestled at a balmy 23.4degC. The widespread rains swiftly slashed daytime mercury by 2degC to 4degC, yet the respite carries severe hazards. Authorities on Thursday sounded an Orange Alert for Aurangabad, Bhabua, Buxar, Gopalganj, and Siwan, warning of intense rain, severe squalls reaching 50-60 km/h, and lightning. Heavy rain warnings also blanket Patna, Bhojpur, Gaya, Muzaffarpur, East Champaran, and Rohtas, alongside heightened block-level lightning alerts across Bhagalpur, Katihar, Munger, and Banka.
