Lalu-Rabri security upgraded to 'Z' level as they shift to pvt house
PATNA, July 5 -- The Bihar government upgraded the security cover of RJD chief Lalu Prasad and former chief minister Rabri Devi to Z category hours after they shifted to their privately-owned house in Kautilya Nagar from the 10 Circular Road bungalow. About a month ago, their security was downgraded and they were to be protected by the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP).
According to an order issued by the Home Department's Special Branch, both leaders will receive a bulletproof car from the HQRT, based on the recommendations of the State Security Committee.
Just as their security demotion stirred a debate, its promotion is also being discussed. The Opposition has questioned the timing, but government sources say the upgrade has been done after evaluating threat perception.
Lalu himself slammed the government, saying the move reflects that "the government is on the backfoot." When asked whether the Bihar government had made a mistake by downgrading their security cover, he replied, "Bahut Galti Kiya Hai (They have done a grave wrong)."
The couple's Z-plus security cover was significantly scaled down following a review by the state government on June 5, replacing it with a bulletproof car, a pilot vehicle, bodyguards and house guards from the BSAP. The decision triggered a fierce political controversy. To lodge a symbolic protest, Rabri Devi and Lalu Prasad returned the security personnel allotted in their respective security details.
Later, the RJD workers were seen guarding the entrance of their 10 Circular Road bungalow.
On Thursday, Rabri shifted to her Kautilya Nagar (MP-MLA Colony) house vacating the official 10 Circular Road house which had been an iconic address for her party leaders and workers who often assembled there for various party-related work.
