Khagaria school tragedy: 1 dead, four injured as stairs collapse
PATNA, Oct. 1 -- A seven-year-old girl was killed and four others were injured on Wednesday morning when a concrete staircase collapsed at a government primary school in the Amani panchayat of Khagaria district, police said. The victim was identified as Ritika Kumari.
Taking strong note of the incident, Khagaria district magistrate (DM) Vikram Virkar has directed the district education officer (DEO) to investigate the collapse and submit a report within 24 hours."
District Education Officer (DEO) Amarendra Kumar Gond confirmed the incident said that the incident took place during the prayer session of the Jatadhar Mishra Primary School. He said that incessant rains contributed to waterlogging in the school premises which subsequently weakened the structure below the staircase.
During the assembly, the staircase collapsed suddenly and the children present there were directly hit by debris. Rescue operations started immediately with the help of villagers and teachers. The injured were rushed to the Community Health Centre (CHC), Mansi, for treatment where doctors declared her dead. The injured are under going treatment in the Sadar hospital. The DEO said, "This is an unfortunate incident. A high-level technical inquiry will be conducted into the matter, including the condition and construction quality of the school's first floor under construction building, and strict legal action will be taken against those found guilty." The family members of the deceased and injured demanding action against the contractor as well as school administration. They raised questions about the materials used in the construction of building and the staircase.
Circle Officer of Mansi block Lilavati Kumari said that the situation has been brought under control and arrangements are being made for proper treatment of the injured. Sub divisional officer (SDO) Dhananjay Kumar while confirming the death of a child said, "The four injured are undergoing treatment at Mansi PHC and they are out of danger."...
