Haridwar, Aug. 10 -- The Shravan Kanwar pilgrimage entered its final and busiest phase on Sunday as vehicular-based Dak Kanwars began arriving in large numbers, triggering a massive influx of Lord Shiva devotees in Haridwar, officials said. According to the Kanwar Mela control cell, the cumulative number of Kanwariyas arriving in Haridwar during the pilgrimage crossed the 38-million mark by Sunday evening. The influx has surged over the past three days. Around 4.5 million Kanwariyas arrived on Friday, followed by another 5.5 million on Saturday, taking the total to nearly 10 million devotees in just 48 hours. By Sunday evening, around 5.6 million Kanwariyas had arrived, with the figure expected to touch 6 million by the end of the day, officials said. The final phase of the pilgrimage, known as Dak Kanwar, involves devotees travelling in large numbers on motorcycles, cars, pickup vehicles and other modes of transport after collecting holy Ganga water. Vehicular Kanwariyas were seen streaming throughout the day along the Delhi-Roorkee-Haridwar and Najibabad-Haridwar national highway routes. With the Dak Kanwar phase commencing on Saturday, traffic restrictions and diversion plans have been fully enforced across Haridwar. Officials said the NH-58 stretch between Har-ki-Pauri and Roorkee-Narsain had been opened to Kanwariya traffic, with thousands of Kanwar vehicles arriving every hour. In view of the heavy movement of devotees and vehicles during the final phase, Haridwar district magistrate Mayur Dixit and senior superintendent of police Navneet Singh Bhullar inspected Bairagi Camp, Har-ki-Pauri and the NH-58 stretch on Sunday to review security, traffic and other arrangements. "As Dak Kanwars have started arriving in large numbers, they are being diverted and parked at Bairagi Camp, which is a Kumbh fair-restricted area. From water, electricity and toilets to cleaning, all arrangements are in place for Dak Kanwariyas," Dixit said. Meanwhile, the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) teams rescued 21 pilgrims from drowning at different ghats and bathing spots during the ongoing Kanwar Mela on Sunday, officials said....
