Jewellery shop owner gunned down during loot bid in Muzaffarpur
PATNA, June 17 -- Two bike-borne men allegedly gunned down a 50-year-old jeweller returning home after closing his shop in Muzaffarpur for resisting a robbery attempt, police said on Tuesday.
The incident took place before his younger son's ring ceremony on June 22, causing uproar among the victim's family and residents who questioned security arrangements in the area.
Family members of the victim said Deepak Kumar Shah was returning home from another route due to the tap water scheme going-on the usual road. He was carrying a bag full of valuables.
Residents alleged when Deepak resisted the robbery bid, a scuffle broke out between both sides. Of the two accused, one shot him in the chest in front of the family before fleeing.
Durgesh Kumar, Deepak's elder son, said, "My nephew was with my father at the time of the incident. He rushed home to inform us about the robbery incident and seek assistance."
"The killer fired multiple rounds. While one bullet hit his chest, another hit his hand. My father was rushed to Ma Janaki Hospital in Bairia where he was declared dead," he added.
"The footage of the crime shows the bikers fleeing after shooting Deepak Kumar Shah on Monday night, barely 100 metres from his house at Madhopur chowk," an officer said.
Police said blood stains, empty cartridges and other evidence were gathered from the crime scene, while CCTV footage from the market and surrounding routes was being scanned.
The victim's family and residents blocked a local road for several hours late Monday by placing Deepak's body and staged a protest demanding the immediate arrest of the two assailants.
Muzaffarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kantesh Mishra said that a massive manhunt has been launched. "Technical evidence, CCTV footage and tip-offs are being analysed. We have identified some suspects."
The SSP added that a full bag of jewellery was found safe near the spot. Police teams also recovered a 7.65 mm pistol, three live cartridges and a magazine from the scene.
On Tuesday, Tirhut range DIG Chandan Kumar Kushwaha reached the spot and inquired about the incident and directed the SSP to constitute an SIT and crack the case earliest.
Meanwhile, Dharmendra Shah, victim's uncle, alleged that a robbery took place at Deepak's shop two months ago. "Since then he used to return home with jewellery after closing the shop."...
