GAYA JI, May 29 -- Armed criminals shot a jeweller and looted Rs.5 lakh in cash along with jewellery worth Rs.35 lakh in the Gurua market under Gaya district on Wednesday late evening. Critically injured jeweller Prabhakar Prasad Barnwal was taken to the local Community Health centre where doctors referred him to Anugrah Narayan Magadh Medical College and Hospital (ANMMCH) at Gaya Ji, police said on Thursday. Eyewitnesses said around 7pm when the jeweller had stepped out of his shop with a bag filled with cash and jewellery to head home when five armed criminals, riding on two bikes, arrived and opened indiscriminate fire upon him. The bullets struck him in the legs and he fell down. His staff Subhash had a narrow escape as two bullets passed right next to his head. The criminals snatched the bag from Barnwal and fled away making aerial firing to terrorise the people in the market. One of them was saying - "You have not signed over the land". Two years back Barnwal had entered into an agreement regarding a plot of land in Gurua, Subhash said. Businessmen in the vicinity downed their shutters in panic and expressed deep resentment regarding lack of safety measures in the market. Upon information, Gaya SSP Sushil Kumar, along with the City SP, other officials and technical team, reached the crime scene and also met the injured merchant in ANMMCH.
