JD(U) nominee leaves hosp as feud continues
PATNA, Oct. 22 -- Janata Dal (United) legislator and chief spokesperson Neeraj Kumar returned home Wednesday after a brief hospitalisation, determined to supervise the final stretch of campaigning for the Patna graduates' constituency of the Bihar legislative council. Polling for this and seven other seats is set for October 23, with counting on the 27th.
Kumar is seeking a fourth successive term from the same graduate seat he has held since 2008. Kumar was admitted Monday evening to a local superspeciality hospital (Jay Prabha Medanta) after complaining of chest pain and low blood pressure, which aides attributed in part to Navratra fasting. By Wednesday he was discharged and declared fit enough to oversee the campaign. Chief minister Samrat Choudhary, deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Choudhary and BJP state president Sanjay Saraogi visited him in hospital, underscoring the National Democratic Alliance's (NDA) public backing.
The hospital interlude became the latest flashpoint in a bitter intra-party feud. Mokama MLA and JD(U) strongman Anant Singh, who has been campaigning aggressively for Kumar's rival, Jan Suraaj Party candidate, Anuj Singh, dismissed the episode as pure 'drama'. "He is neither ill, nor does he have a fever. Nothing has happened," Singh said, adding that Kumar's hospital visits conveniently coincide with the need to distribute money at booths. The remarks only sharpened an already public confrontation between two Bhumihar leaders from the Mokama-Barh belt whose rivalry stretches back years.
Kumar brushed aside the taunts. Speaking as the NDA candidate, he expressed confidence that the electorate would deliver a 'befitting reply' to Anant Singh for defying the party leadership and working against NDA interests. Health minister Nishant Kumar, son of JD(U) national president and former chief minister Nitish Kumar, has been actively campaigning for him, along with other senior leaders. "My electors would give a befitting reply," Kumar told reporters.
The Patna graduates' seat, covering parts of Patna, Nalanda and Nawada with roughly 80,000 registered graduate voters, has rarely been contested. Meanwhile, Anant Singh has left no stone unturned since Kumar's nomination: accompanying Anuj Singh to file papers, organising processions, and publicly declaring he would ensure Kumar's defeat....
