PATNA, Sept. 23 -- A sharp political row has erupted in Bihar after sports and industries minister and Jamui MLA Shreyasi Singh's comments on the alleged harassment of two Class 10 students in her constituency. The incident, which took place on September 19, involved a group of men stopping a teenage boy and girl returning from coaching under the pretext of 'moral policing' and allegedly mistreating them. Singh, speaking in a television interview, condemned the 'mishandling and mistreatment' of the minors as 'absolutely not tolerable'. She went on to say that 'moral policing can be done in a more decent and elegant fashion', adding that people may hold opinions on how others choose to live their lives and that there might be a better way to express them. She also stressed that the case must set a precedent and that she would ensure no loopholes remained for the accused. The remarks have drawn strong criticism from opposition leaders and those of the NDA constituent partners in the state, who called them reflective of a problematic mindset and demanded accountability. State Congress media department head Rajesh Rathore said the minister's statement underlined the mentality of the BJP and NDA leadership.
