Intra-party tussles among partners put NDA on edge
PATNA, Oct. 7 -- The Bihar legislative council election for eight seats - four each for teacher and graduate constituencies -- has brought to fore the fissures within the political parties and alliances, especially within the NDA. As a principal constituent of the NDA, the Janata Dal (United), is grappling with a feud between two of its leaders, while another alliance partner Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) is witnessing an intra-party flare-up.
Three of the four RLM MLAs -- Madhav Anand, Rameswar Mahto and Alok Singh -- joined the nomination of party leader Rampukar Sinha from the Saran Teacher seat. The JD(U) has fielded Anand Pushkar as the NDA nominee.
RLM MLA Anand Madhav also dared party supremo Upendra Kushwaha not to ignore the sentiments of the party leaders. "If three of the four MLAs are taking any decision, it is the party decision. If Deepak Prakash is today a minister, it is also because RLM has four MLAs. We are working for the strength and respect of the party and more people can join us, as ours is the party line," said RLM MLA Anand Madhav.
Madhav said that three of the four MLAs not only took a decision but also participated in the nomination filing, which witnessed a lot of enthusiasm among party workers. "The party runs with the support of workers and we don't want them to feel ignored. When it was the question of a minister, we backed the decision, but right now it is not a question of a minister," he added, pointing to the differences within the party when Deepak Prakash was made the minister.
The turn of events has, however, clearly drawn the line within the RLM, with three party MLAs on one side, while the fourth is Upendra Kushwaha's wife Snehlata Kushwaha. Upendra Kushwaha, on the other hand, brushed aside talks of any differences within the party, saying, "Council polls have led to a kind of intoxication in the political atmosphere and the NDA and the Opposition seem affected." The three RLM MLAs had given a scare to the party in January also over the fate of Prakash.
The poll time tussle between JD(U) MLA from Mokama Anant Singh and three-time party MLC Neeraj Kumar has perturbed the party which, through Union minister Lalan Singh, has tried to subdue the rift and the party claims that it's been resolved too. Even though there are claims that the feud is far from over.
JD(U) working president Sanjay Jha said that Lalan Singh had worked in the best interest of the party. "We have updated party chief Nitish Kumar about all the developments and nominations during a meeting with him," he added.
The same was reiterated by deputy CM Vijay Kumar Choudhary during a media interaction at the party office....
