India, Nepal discuss mgmt of Kosi, Gandak barrages
patna, May 3 -- Ahead of the monsoon season, several key decisions were taken between India and Nepal for better coordination and maintenance of the Kosi and Gandak river projects during the 11th joint meeting of Joint Committee on Kosi and Gandak Projects (JCKGP) held in Kathmandu, Nepal on April 30 and May 1.
The bilateral meeting, which top officials of India government, water resources department (WRD), Bihar and top officials of Nepal government attended, laid focus on sharing of rainfall data and discharge of water from rivers in Nepal with India as per the flood forecasting model during the monsoon.
There were also discussions on various initiatives being taken by WRD, Bihar for keeping the course of Kosi river midstream in the Kosi barrage through shoal loosening and construction of a pilot channel. Principal secretary,WRD, Bihar Santosh Kumar Mall and director general , water resources, irrigation department ,Nepal, Mitra Baral were prominent representatives of India and Nepal governments at the meeting.
As per a press statement, key decisions during the talks included removal of encroachments on the eastern and western sides of the afflux bund of Kosi barrage as well as on the Kosi main canal in the Nepal side. The illegal habitations on Gandak barrage area in Valimikinagar would also be removed at the earliest as per the assurance given by Nepal government.
There was also a demand from Nepal to furnish the list of works to be done in the Kosi barrage on the Nepal side to which the Indian authorities agreed to send the list through email and also there was agreement by the Indian authorities to provide satellite imagery to Nepal authorities....
