holi: bihar police face challenge of preventing hooch tragedies
PATNA, March 3 -- Around Holi, the liquor consumption picks up significantly, creating a huge demand and thus a sharp spurt in the smuggling of illicit liquor the state. It becomes a perennial pain for the Bihar police to prevent illegal trade especially since the liquor prohibition came into force 10 years ago.
Like all years, the police have also braced up to ensure hoock tragedy-free Holi this year as well. The police head quarters has written to all the SPs to constitute special teams and carry out regular inspections to prevent movement, production and stocking of liquor, spirit, drugs of any type of intoxicant.
The Prohibition and State Narcotics Control Bureau (PSNCB) has specially alerted the SPs of all districts to prevent liquor smuggling on Holi and to prevent hooch incidents. Police headquarters (PHQ) formed five separate teams headed by DSP rank officer sent them in the fields where hooch incidents reported till 2024 and ordered to keep tab on habitual offenders involved in smuggling, transportation and storage spurious liquor and other substances....
