Heavy vehicles banned on RoB in Lakhisarai amid safety issues
PATNA/LAKHISARAI, May 13 -- In a stark reminder of the state's crumbling infrastructure, authorities in Lakhisarai district have banned the movement of heavy vehicles on a railway overbridge (RoB) after cracks were detected in the structure, raising fresh concerns over public safety and the deteriorating condition of Bihar's aging roads and bridges.
The decision came after a technical team of the road construction department (RCD) inspected the RoB and flagged visible damage. District magistrate Shailendra Kumar (talking to the HT) confirmed the restriction on trucks, trailers and buses, directing lighter traffic to continue with caution while repairs are assessed. Locals and drivers reported seeing the cracks during routine passage, prompting swift administrative action to avoid any mishap.
Videos put on the social media from the site shows the overbridge looming over a busy stretch, with dust kicked up by passing vehicles and daily commuters navigating the area. Officials described the move as precautionary, but it has already begun affecting goods movement in a region where such bridges form vital links between towns and highways.
The DM said that the damage in the RoB was detected during the safety audit of bridges in the district. "Another small bridge, connecting the district headquarters with Chanan block, was found to have some structural damage," he said, adding that the RCD was on the task to repair bridges and restore normal traffic.
This incident arrives amid a broader push by the RCD to scrutinize the state's bridges following a string of worrying failures. Just days ago, the department ordered an urgent safety audit of all major bridges - those spanning 60 metres and above - to be completed within 72 hours....
