Goyal hints at 'rebalancing' of India-U.S. trade deal after sc's tariff verdict
NEW DELHI, Feb. 28 -- The India-US joint statement released on February 6 provides for rebalancing of the proposed interim trade deal if circumstances change, Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said, adding that New Delhi is watching the evolving situation post the American Supreme Court's verdict.
Speaking at News18 Rising Bharat Summit 2026 in New Delhi, he said India values comparative advantage vis-a-vis its competitors more than the tariff per say. His comments were with reference to the India-US joint statement released on February 7 (India time) where Washington committed to reduce tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18% for preferential access of its products in the Indian market. The 18% tariff announced through the joint statement made India's labour-intensive items competitive vis-a-vis competitors like China, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Indonesia. But, before the two sides could sign a formal agreement, the US Supreme Court on February 20 invalidated President Donald Trump's sweeping global tariffs.
On a specific question -- "is our position changing"-- related to the commitments proposed by both sides in India-US joint statement before the court's verdict, Goyal said: "As I said, this is an evolving situation, we'll have to see."
He was hinting at the evolving situation in the US as after the Supreme Court's verdict, Washington has been making various statements regarding other available legal tools....
