Gangster held after encounter in US Nagar's Shaktifarm
Rudrapur, Sept. 29 -- Police arrested a wanted gangster after an encounter in Shaktifarm area of Udham Singh Nagar late on Saturday night. The accused, identified as Gagan Ratanpuria, had been absconding since a firing incident during student union election nominations in Rudrapur earlier this week, officials said.
Senior superintendent of police (SSP) Manikant Mishra said on Sunday that a violent clash broke out on Wednesday during the nomination process, leading to firing between two groups. "Ratanpuria was one of the prime accused. Acting on a tip-off, police tracked him down in Shaktifarm. When asked to surrender, he opened fire on the police team. In retaliatory fire, he sustained a bullet injury in his left leg and was later admitted to Sitarganj government hospital," the SSP said.
According to police, Ratanpuria fired at least four rounds during the exchange. He has a history of crime, with 32 cases registered against him across Kichha, Rudrapur, Pulbhatta, Bilaspur (Rampur) and Bareilly police stations, including charges of murder, attempt to murder and offences under the Arms Act.
