FRI scientists treat sacred Bodhi Tree for mealybug infestation
GAYA, July 10 -- Bodhgaya Temple Management Committee (BTMC), in collaboration with scientists from the Forest Research Institute (FRI), Dehradun, on Thursday undertook a preventive eco-friendly pest management measure to protect the sacred Bodhi Tree and its adjacent tree within Mahabodhi Temple premises in Bodh Gaya.
FRI scientists Shailesh Pandey and Santan Bharthawal observed a mild mealybug infestation on the tree which had caused certain leaves to turn yellow. "An eco-friendly spray was applied to the tree to prevent further infestation of the insects. The adjacent tree was also sprayed as a preventive measure," the FRI scientists told HT.
BTMC secretary Mahashweta Maharathi, members Arvind Kumar Singh and Kiran Lama, Temple chief monk Venerable Bhikkhu Chalinda, senior monks and officials supervised the exercise taken ahead of the monsoon as a preventive measure to inhibit the spread of mealybugs during the season's humid conditions....
