Four, including SHO, held for corruption, extortion in Gopalganj
PATNA, Aug. 20 -- Four people, including the station house officer of Gopalganj's Jadopur, have been arrested for alleged corruption and extortion, police said on Wednesday. Initial investigation revealed that innocent people were held captive inside the police station for hours without any FIR or legal permission.
They extorted their families by threatening to implicate those locked up in false cases and bribes were taken in lieu of removing their names from the case. The fraud came to light on August 16 through a tip-off to Gopalganj SP Vinay Tiwari who entrusted the DSP headquarters to verify the allegation and conduct a thorough investigation. During the investigation, it came to light that some persons were illegally detained in the police station for about 36 hours without any station diary entry.
Tiwari said, "We received a tip-off that the then SHO of Jadopur, Anil Ram, was misusing his position and extorting money. The case was investigated by the DSP headquarters. During investigation, the allegations were found true. The investigation report stated allegations have been raised against the SHO, chowkidar Mahant Yadav, police driver Rakesh Kumar and a middleman Raju Yadav for committing illegal and criminal acts with citizens and demanding and extorting illegal money."
During the course of the investigation, the DSP headquarters found that one Jitan Ram, Vijay Ram, Shankar Ram besides a woman and her minor daughter were detained for 36 hours without any prior or legal permission and extorted money on the pretext of framing them in the false case. A total of Rs.50,000 was extorted from Jitan Ram and others through Raju Yadav. An amount of Rs.75,000 was also collected through chowkidar Mahant Yadav in lieu of releasing the woman and her daughter from the police station premises.
Investigation revealed that Rs.55,000 was collected in the name of removing the name of Satyendra Singh's son Luv Kush from a case. During the investigation, it has also come to light that middlemen and chowkidars were allegedly sent to intimidate and influence the witnesses. The investigation team has also found strong evidence of frequent phone conversations between the SHO and the middleman Raju Yadav.
Based on the investigation report of the DSP, Gopalganj police registered an FIR against the four persons including the then SHO, chowkidar, driver and middleman with the Jadopur police station and arrested all the four accused and sent them to judicial custody. Gopalganj SP Vinay Tiwari said that acts like misuse of official position, bribery and illegal detention of anyone will not be tolerated. Taking serious note of attempts to intimidate witnesses and influence the investigation, he said strict action will be taken under the policy of zero tolerance against any policeman or middleman violating the law....
