PATNA, Sept. 28 -- Delhi's Lt Governor Sardar Taranjit Singh Sandhu on Sunday said that in today's interconnected global environment, foreign policy is not limited to political and strategic relations only, but is also an important medium for attracting investment, accessing new markets, acquiring technology, strengthening supply chains and creating employment opportunities. He was delivering a lecture on the subject of "Diplomacy: The Power that gives momentum to the resolve of a developed India" under the Pataliputra Pragya Pravah series at Bihar Lok Bhavan. "The fundamental basis of India's foreign policy is national interest and in changing times, the scope of national interest has expanded to economic development, technological capability and human resource development. This is particularly important for India's resolve to a developed India," he added. Referring to India-US relations, Sandhu said that the cooperation between the two countries has now expanded to areas such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, space, Defence, clean energy, education and advanced manufacturing. "Such international cooperation should be aimed at securing investment as well as strengthening manufacturing, research, skills and technical capabilities in the country," he added. He said India would also have to strengthen its domestic capabilities and supply chains while engaging more strongly with the global economy. "International partnerships provide opportunities, but transforming them into growth requires better infrastructure, skilled human resources, capable institutions, and a favourable business environment," he added. He said that the real measure of the success of foreign policy should be based on how much it strengthens the country's domestic capabilities. "When foreign policy and domestic capabilities go hand in hand, diplomacy becomes an important force in national development and building a developed India," he added. In his opening remarks, Bihar Gocernor Lt Gen (rid) ATA Hasnain said that developed India means not only economic development, education, technology and better infrastructure, but also India's strong position in the world to protect its national interests. Sandhu also highlighted India's growing role as a contributor to the global system in terms of digital public infrastructure, large-scale digital payments, space capabilities and startup ecosystems.
