Five cops among six injured in Champaran
BETTIAH, May 24 -- Five police personnel and a municipal corporation employee were injured after an anti-encroachment drive in Bettiah town of West Champaran district turned violent on Saturday, police said.
According to the officials, the incident occurred after a posse of security personnel and municipal corporation employees were engaged in removal of encroachment near government medical college and hospital (GMCH) when a crowd of 25-odd people, many of them women, went after the team conducting the anti-encroachment drive on Saturday afternoon.
"They pelted stones at the anti-encroachment team and attacked them with bamboo staff in which one municipal corporation employee and a policewoman were critically injured," said Vikash Kumar, sub-divisional magistrate (SDM), Bettiah.
However, four other policemen escaped with minor injuries, said a police officer.
The troublemakers retreated only after the SDM who rushed to the spot with reinforcement swung into action and arrested one person.
"The CCTV footage is being examined to identify the people involved in the attack," the SDM said, adding a JCB used in anti-encroachment drive was also damaged by the mob....
