Family rejects judicial probe, seeks CBI inquiry
PATNA/ARA, June 28 -- Family of Bharat Bhushan Tiwari, a youth from Bhojpur who died after sustaining injuries in an encounter with police on June 17, says they don't trust the judicial inquiry just initiated into his death. They object to Bhojpur superintendent of police (SP) Raj and SDM Sanjeet Kumar for their role in the investigation. They are instead seeking a new probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) monitored by the Supreme Court or an investigation headed by a sitting judge of the Patna high court.
The family says that Justice Vinod Kumar Sinha, a retired judge of the Patna high court, who is heading the probe panel and even visited Tiwari's parental village two days ago, has been appointed to cover up his killing.
"The SP and SDM who oversaw Bharat's shooting are roaming with investigating team. How can we expect a fair investigation?" said Asha Devi, mother of Bharat.
Bharat's brother Chandan Tiwari said that both the Bhojpur SP and Sahabad range DIG should be transferred so that the investigation could be conducted fairly. He also asked why the police officers -- SHO of Sahapur and SDPO of Jagdishpur -- named in the FIR for Bharat's killing have not been arrested yet. "If a common man is booked for murder, he is arrested immediately. Why haven't these police officers been arrested?" he asked.
He also alleged that SP Raj threatened his family with dire consequences if they don't close the chapter (of Bharat's killing), stop talking to the media and continue protesting over the issue. "Attempts are being made to suppress the encounter case, but I am not going to be suppressed by the police, the public has also come to know the whole truth," he added.
Meanwhile, the Bhojpur SP issued a press release on Saturday denying Chandan's allegation, stating that the allegation is completely untrue, baseless and factually incorrect. "The allegation of any kind of threat or pressure during a private conversation in his house is completely wrong. It seems that this allegation is being made by Chandan under the influence of some external elements," the SP said in a press release.
Meanwhile, political leaders and sympathisers continued to visit Bilauti village to show solidarity with the Tiwari family.
Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee president Ajay Rai and Haryana Congress MLA Kuldeep Vats reached Bilauti village to meet the family members of Bharat Tiwari on Saturday. The two leaders met Bharat's parents and other family members and assured them of justice.
Rai backed the family's demand for a CBI inquiry and said that Bharat was killed at the behest of the state government. He also alleged that since the Modi government arrived at the Centre, the Brahmin community is being targeted....
