PURNEA, June 11 -- The family of a 25-year-old undertrial prisoner, who allegedly died by suicide at Jadia police station, staged a protest by blocking nearby State Highway 91 in Bihar's Supaul on Wednesday, alleging custodial assault leading to the death. Koriyapatti resident Bittu Kumar, allegedly a habitual drinker, had been handed over to the police by his family on Tuesday night for 'correction'. Police said Kumar was found hanging from a piece of his own cloth on Wednesday during a routine check-up. SP Sarath RS said, "One man brought to the police station died in custody. Prima facie, it appears that he died by hanging. We have sent the body for post-mortem." The family accused police of beating him to death and staging it as a suicide. Police pacified the protestors and assured a proper investigation. The SP said the autopsy would be conducted by a board of doctors and the entire process would be recorded. "Judicial inquiry has been initiated and whoever is found guilty of negligence will be punished. CCTV footage has been preserved and forensic experts are examining the nature of death," he said.
