Dy CM Vijay reviews drought, flood preparedness in Patna
PATNA, May 16 -- Deputy chief minister Vijay Kumar Chaudhary, who also holds the portfolio for the water resources department, on Friday reviewed flood and drought preparedness in the state during a high-level meeting at Irrigation Bhawan in Patna.
He directed all necessary preparations ahead of time to effectively deal with both floods and low rainfall situations that affect a large part of Bihar due to heavy rains in Nepal and erratic weather conditions in India.
"Ensure that the work is completed ahead of time with quality so that remedial steps could be taken in time after proper assessment. Those who do better work will be appreciated while strict action will be taken against lax workers," he added.
Reviewing various flood prone areas of the state, Chaudhary held intensive discussions on the progress of erosion prevention works, repair and maintenance of embankments, availability of flood protection materials, surveillance of sensitive sites, etc.
"During the flood period, the entire length of embankments must be patrolled with readiness. Continuous inspection leads to timely detection of vulnerable points and action prevents damage from turning into disaster," he added.
Choudhary said that the remaining canal strengthening work should be completed soon and asked regional authorities to connect with locals and administration for better flood management. He ordered the inspection of canal systems to be carried out till the tail end to ensure water is easily available to the farmers in the upcoming Kharif season.
Department secretary Chandrashekhar Singh assured Choudhary that all flood protection and canal strengthening work would be completed before time. He also listed preparations being made to strengthen flood management and irrigation systems.
Urban development minister Anirudh Mishra also issued directions to the officials to ensure a smooth drainage system in view of the approaching rainy season, as overflowing and choked drains pose serious challenges every year....
