India, Sept. 26 -- T he Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has proposed banning the manufacture and sale of non-dairy analogue products marketed as "paneer" across all states. This is to prevent consumers from being misled about what these products contain. In a notification issued Thursday, the regulator proposed amendments to the Food Safety and Standards (Prohibition and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011. Products currently licensed under the "Analogue in Dairy Context" category would no longer be allowed to use the word "paneer" in their name, labelling or marketing. Analogue paneer is made using ingredients such as vegetable oils, starches, plant proteins, emulsifiers and other additives instead of milk fat. The body said that the move aims to help consumers make informed choices by ensuring that a product's name and presentation match its composition. It has also invited objections and suggestions for 60 days from the date the relevant Official Gazette copies are made available to the public. After considering the representations received, FSSAI would proceed with the regulatory process. The proposal comes as several states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh, have already banned analogue paneer. A food delivery platform has also introduced a zero-tolerance policy for dishes containing analogue dairy products.
