Denied ticket in MLC polls, RJD's Dalit face resigns
PATNA, June 9 -- Three-term RJD MLA, former minister and a close aide of Lalu Prasad, Shiv Chandra Ram on Monday resigned from the party after being denied ticket in the MLC election.
RJD fielded former MLC Sunil Singh, who filed his nomination for the MLC election on the last day on Monday.
A prominent Dalit face of the party and, national president of Ravidas Chetna Manch and former national president of Yuva RJD, Ram was a prominent Dalit face of the party and his resignation is being seen as the manifestation of a new wave of discontent brewing within the party.
Ram got emotional at the press conference he called to announce his resignation and broke down.
"Nobody should get this kind of life. I worked devotedly for the party, but the entire Dalit community feels being humiliated. I could not sleep for the last four nights and all my supporters and Dalit brothers and sisters are in Patna," he further said.
Lalu Prasad's daughter Rohini Acharya also took to X to express her strong resentment over denial of ticket to Ram and the party's choice without naming him or anyone. A few hours after the post, Ram held a press conference to announce his resignation.
"How can someone entrusted the responsibility by Lalu Prasad to take forward the fight of social justice choose someone known for abetting factionalism, internal sabotage, betrayal, deceit and collusion with opponents? Is there a dearth of dedicated and loyal workers? Due to such people the party has suffered, including in the November 2025 election. Ignoring loyal and trusted party leaders is a matter of serious concern," Rohini wrote.
Ram, who was also national president of the party's SC-ST cell, alleged that party leaders had assured him of respect and opportunity, but the promise was not fulfilled and he was humiliated.
"I had been promised the seat. Now I have to work according to the desire of my supporters and I decided to resign form all party posts... If Dalits don't get what they deserve, there is no point continuing," he added.
Ram began his political career with the RJD and was seen as one of its strong leaders.
In the 2024 Lok Sabha election, he contested against LJP-R chief Chirag Paswan from Hajipur, but lost.
In 2019, he had lost to LJP candidate Pashupati Kumar Paras from the same seat.
He was elected twice from Mahua seat for the Vidhan Sabha and once from the Raja Pakar seat in succession since February 2005, but lost in both 2020 and 2025 form Patepur seat.
He was also a minister in the Grand Alliance (GA) government in the 2014-17 period.
There was no immediate official reaction from the party, but Sunil Singh, who got the lone RJD ticket for the MLC seat, said he had great regard for Rohini and she was a leader of the party....
